New Members AtariYMas9 Posted July 8 New Members Share Posted July 8 I collected this fossil many years ago and I have always been intrigued by what it could be. The truth is that it is certainly similar to a bone, but since I am just a collector and not an expert, I would like someone here to give me their opinion about it. of this fossil. It was collected in Alicante, Spain and is found in a calcareous matrix.
Fossildude19
Sorry, not a bone. Looks to me like some sort of quartz or calcite inclusion. If you put some vinegar on it, and it fizzes, it is calcite. If no fizz, then likely quartz. The material it is made of is calcareous, but couldn't the "cylinder" that is embedded be a bone? In the area from which I took it there are no inorganic mineral formations similar to this one. Here I leave another photo to better appreciate the piece.
Fossildude19
Not a bone expert by any means, but I don't see any indication of bone textures. Looks like a mineral, to me.
