Today has not been kind to me. Originally, I was off work today, and had planned to leave early this morning to check out some potential trilobite ridden rock around St. Louis. This didn't happen, as I was awoken early to learn and find my car had been the victim of a hit and run.

I will not be able to collect for some time now, which is very saddening. This was my first brand new car purchase, and I had planned to drive that car until the wheels literally fell off. That is no longer an option, so I was faced with cleaning what i could out, and saving some mementos I had forgotten about.

Fortunately, I was able to salvage a case of fossils, though some still took some damage. So I will share these today instead.

Some of these fossils may have been shared before, so I apologize for repeats. These were all I could salvage from 3 cases I left in my trunk. Here is a mix of Pennsylvanian Deer Creek Formation fossils, a few Mississippian Burlington Formation fossils, a Silurian double ventral Calymenid slab, and a few fossils from Texas as well. The crinoid and trilobite I believe were collected at Mineral Wells, while I believe the other 4 were collect along the NSR.

Both straight shelled cephalopods were broken. The root to the tooth also split away, and couldn't be located.

I'm glad I doubled checked under my driver's side seat. I had forgot about this slab I started to trim that had 2 ventral Calymene. They aren't the best, but worth saving.

It was nice to see some fossils I haven't put eyes on in some time now, and also recover a few I forgot about. I hope your day goes better than mine has!

Very sorry this happened to you but thank you for sharing the story and the wonderful fossils though it is sad that some of them have been damaged.

All the best to you.

So, very sorry about your car. Hopefully you're back on the road before too long. Those finds though are pretty cool!

Man, this really stinks to hear, my friend.  Wish I could help you out some way. So sorry this has happened.

Hope your car can be replaced or fixed.

Great finds, and well worth a second or third viewing.

Hang in there, bud.

I hope so as well. It has definitely put a halt to the next few collecting trips I had planned, and hoped to share as well.

Nice finds! Hopefully you at least had full insurance coverage.

I do have insurance. Not sure how insurance policies work in your country, but here it will require me spending my deductible (1000$), waiting a few weeks at best to probably get compensated a diminished return of my true car's value. Alas, then I will have to go shopping for another car, which also requires paying sales taxes, licensing, and registry. At best, I'll be spending a few thousand dollars on someone else's mistake, who likley won't pay any justice. Insurance here is a joke.

Thanks Tim. It is hard to deal with right now, things seem to be piling up currently. I'm wondering what I did to deserve this.. Though, it is not the end of the world, and I will continue forward.

I did a bit of cleaning on one of the crinoids to try and take my mind off of things. It's looking good so far. I took apart one of my old nut crackers, and funny enough it is working great as a small pick!

Doesn't sound very ideal. If you have the proper type of insurance here, you get the full value back, but of course we also would then have to do the running around which you mentioned.

So sorry to hear about your car. Thanks for sharing the fossils you were still able to enjoy. Is there any chance you or the police can get plates off of cameras nearby? In my area there are so many of those doorbell cameras and other property cameras, a hit-and-run driver would usually be recorded somewhere.

It certainly is a painful experience to deal with this kind of an event.  Insurance never covers the whole loss, but it does beat having to continue making payments on a vehicle you don't even have any more.  I think my wife has insurance on her car that covers the cost of a new vehicle, but I don't know what she pays for that.  I'm sure it's expensive, otherwise a lot of people would cheat and buy a new car, then have "something happen" every few years so their insurance buys them a brand new vehicle.  How convenient, buy a car once and have the insurance replace it periodically in perpetuity!

Does your insurance cover a rental vehicle until your car can be replaced?  That might at least allow you to continue with your collecting plans.

  • 2 weeks later...

@FossilDAWG Insurance does beat having to pay out of pocket for the whole new vehicle. I didn't opt for a rental vehicle on my insurance contract, so that's out of pocket.

@patelinho7 Unfortunately not, I went around the neighborhood knocking on doors but didn't get any answers.
