Supposed Nothosaur

Recommended Posts

I found this (potential) fossil labelled Nothosauria and I noticed it was going for a quite affordable price. I did, however, question its legitimacy. So I thought it wise to bring it to the forum, as you all appear far more knowledgeable than me. IMG_4653.thumb.jpeg.1e14db2d4422495d6018ca351d308035.jpegIMG_4652.thumb.jpeg.aa59b755d559d772a0a138eb724c37ea.jpegIMG_4654.thumb.jpeg.0ac43b1ddda9b5d4add764f353fc3a85.jpeg

Looks too good to be true in my opinion. And it doesn't look at all like a Nothosaurus. Much too small.

Thanks!

That was what I thought, but as I am an opportunist, I thought it would be worth an ask.

Fake as a three dollar bill :shakehead:

These ones are nearly always fake. They get carved and painted or just painted onto a flat slab. The flat bones, no bone structure, the completly wrong anatomy, the eyeballs that wont fossilice, and and and....

See how they have sometimes three, four or five and six toes and fingers, sometimes even on one specimen they variy.

Stay faaar away. Please.

Definitely! I didn’t even really have a chance to look at them properly, or I wouldn’t have posted it! Thanks for all of your feedback.
