New Members Bgkyfossilguy Posted July 20 New Members Share Posted July 20 Found this little guy in a creek. The photos really don’t do the detail justice. I’m new to this, and really appreciate the insight/expertise. Thank you so much.
Fossildude19
My guess would be some sort of echinoderm - crinoid calyx, blastoid, or cystoid of some sort. Mochaccino
What is the age and locality? It resembles a Devonian blastoid known as Nucleocrinus. Edited July 20 by Mochaccino
New Members Bgkyfossilguy Posted July 20 Author New Members Share Posted July 20 Age I wouldn’t know. We are in South Central Kentucky.
ClearLake
That looks like an interesting suggestion by @Mochaccino . The Devonian in Kentucky is in a pretty narrow band. If you give us a county or nearby city where you found it, we might be able to tell from the geologic map if Devonian is a possibility.
New Members Bgkyfossilguy Posted July 21 Author New Members Share Posted July 21 The town is Adolphus, ky. It’s right outside of Scottsville, Ky.
Fossildude19
There does appear to be some Devonian outcrops in the general vicinity. ClearLake
Yes, indeed, the RockD app also shows some very small Devonian aged Chattanooga Shale exposed periodically along the Trammel Creek valley in the Adolphus area. From a quick read of one summary of the Devonian in that area, that is probably a good find as macro fossils are a bit rarer than in other areas. Nice catch!! Mochaccino
Could also be something like Cryptoblastus, which is Mississippian if that's more likely.
dries85
I don't know the locality, but could this be a crab carapace? Also don't know much about crabs 😅 but the last pic seems to show where the legs used to be attached.. or this might be my first case of pareidolia 🙄
