Charleston, South Carolina Molar and Other Misc. Finds

Recommended Posts

Hey friends! I am primarily interested in identifying this tooth (I think) found in Charleston, SC on Morris Island. Maybe tapir? (25 x 20 x 11 mm). Thank you! I've included some other misc. finds that typically end up being just rocks, but give me pause as a novice! Thank you all so much, you all were incredibly helpful on my first post! I also posted my haul from today at the end just for fun, a little over 100 teeth!

Welcome to TFF From SW Florida.  I have been addicted in fossil hunting for 15 years and I also struggle with these distinction because there are few no differentiators. Ir does not get better the longer you are addicted.

You do have a tapir molar.

I chose this quote because lower right is certainly a jaw with alveoli,  likely dolphin or fish.

Thank you for your kind welcome and your help! It is good to know there's not something obvious I'm missing in regards to the potential bones. I may just move towards picking up ones that have some sort of unusual or definite element to them. I am excited about the tapir tooth!

Thank you for sharing your image with me! This is a new ID for me, how exciting!

Perhaps it's just me missing something, but I'm not seeing definitive evidence of a jaw in her photo.  I see a few indentions, but nothing suggesting alveoli to me.  @JessicaCharleston, can we get a close-up photo of that piece of bone?

Not definitive evidence,  just a suggestion and opinion. I always appreciate multiple points of view, I think we see the same, and just interpret it differently.

I think I see the alvioli in the last picture, but I don't know what has teeth in that pattern (it appears two of them are diagonal from each other but others are in a row?).  See what others think.  @Shellseeker

I am intermittent on TFF for 5-6 more days.

I agree with you on the point that I have not seen alvioli on an unworn piece of jaw that are only diagonal.

Usually, when anything falls into my sieve, I try to ID  as tooth, bone, non_fossil, etc In looking at bones that have markings, holes, grooves... I usually ask myself if I have ever seen anything like it previously..  that question will narrow my focus,  before I throw it away.

It is a very different question than "do I think I know what this bone is?",  A few times it helps me understand how I try to ID a bone.

Could be. Looks sturdier, more "bony" than the sturgeon material I have and have seen however, which is usually flaky.  Do you have a cross-section view?

Partial fish hypural (i.e., tail vertebra).  These are usually ascribed to either billfish or Scombridae (tuna family).  Unfortunately, I don't see enough for me to opine either way.
