I found what I think it is a fossilized stromatoporoid?

Late Ordovician, Quebec

  • Denis Arcand changed the title to is this a stromatoporoid or bryozoan?

I'm not an expert on your formation or stromatoporoids, but seems like it could be. Does it differ from all the usual rock you find in that formation? I guess you're reluctant to cut it open or you have no access to a saw?

Looks like metamorphic rock to me.

At first sight, it looks intriguing.

Upon closer inspection (good details in your pics!), it looks like a siliciclastic rock, so no fossil.

@FranzBernhard, it seems you are right, no distinctive feature on the inside. It's a rock ? :(

I wonder what would create the mound-like features on its surfaces ?

Yes, not a fossil.

Sandstone or gneiss, not sure. Metamorphic rock was already suggested by @Rockwood.

No idea about the features on the surface.

Crystals formed during metamorphosis being more resistant to weathering/erosion would explain the mounds.

I'm having trouble seeing past the saw marks but I trust you can see better in hand what it is, so I guess we have an answer.  ^_^
