Bone from the Boulonnais region of France (again)

Hello (again) everyone!

Here is another bone from the Kimmeridgian of the Boulonnais region (North of France).

It measures just over 20 cm (8 inch) in lenght.

At first, I thought it was a thick piece of rib from a bony fish (doesn’t match the cut shape of plesio, ichthyo or croc rib).

Then, while preparing it, this « back » part seemed different to the rest of the bone being thin. It almost looks as if there are muscle attachments.

Obviously, I am hoping that this might be a piece of jaw. :D

For now I only did carefull manual prep on it. I am waiting for the paraloid to dry to give it a quick vinegar bath and try removing some more matrix with an air scribe.

Has anyone got any clue?

Thank you very much!

Interesting piece, but don't have a clue as to what this might be. Seeing size, thickness and how straight the bit of bone is, however, I suspect that a piece of jaw isn't too far off... Nice one! 😁

great find. hard or impossible to say where it belongs to. Might be a rib..., but

Go to dig the skull!

Actually, yeah, considering the hand for scale, I agree, this could also be a rib. Fits the cross-section quite nicely...

Hello again! Here is an update. It still needs some prep and it is all shiny with the extra coats of paraloid, but the shape is already a bit more there. Sadly it looks like the bone was crushed prior to fossilization:

Sorry, no ideas as to what this could be, though a section of mandible comes to mind as these are usually straight, can include thickening, and consist of multiple bones, making them more prone to breakage. This particular piece reminds me of the surangular/dentary-joint a bit 🤔

  • 2 weeks later...

I think rib or piece of mandible. These eroded fragments can be quite impossible….

  • I found this Informative 1
