Sponge or coral or?

Hi everyone. This is out of a box of rocks I bought at an auction in Butte County California, which is near the Sacramento River and a hundred miles from Mt Lassen. I don't believe all of them were found here, but I don't know. Thank you all in advance.

Hard to tell and particularly with no definite information on its provenance, difficult to identify. One would need to study the microscopic internal structure in order to determine if this is a sponge. I believe from what I see however that this is just a weathered porous rock, but maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps someone familiar with the area sees this otherwise.

Thank you, I figure you're right. And I'm learning so much about fossils that in the time since I posted this, I've seen enough other pictures to think it might not be a Sponge or coral. There's so much to learn. Thank you so much for your help.
