Absolutely AMAZING!!

Hopefully there are some earbones in there somewhere. Apparently they are more loosely attached to the skull in odontocetes so aren’t always in situ.

Thanks @old bones (and everyone else)!  I was hoping to go see it for myself yesterday, but have COVID now, so I'll have to wait.  But, I'll get to help prep the other jackets that have the less important parts (verts and ribs).  :)

Back here again to drool over this find. What an amazing discovery and journey. Part of what I like about fossils. The different chapters in enjoying them, the physical adventure in the field and then the adventure in time and space in our minds.

here’s to a speedy recovery from covid do you can get in to see your baby soon!

Thank you, everyone!  It has been such a great experience to find it and participate in the excavation, and I look forward to helping with the prep.

I hate to admit it, but I was surprisingly calm when I found it, for a couple reasons.  First, I didn't realize what all was there.  I think I could only see around 20 verts and I couldn't identify the parts of the skull.  Second, I had to contact someone to come look at it, and I worried that I might be wasting her time (luckily, I wasn't).

Once others came to see it and I saw their reactions, I realized it was a really nice find.  But, I still couldn't relax until we got it out safely.  I was so nervous watching the crane lift each jacket out of the creek!  It was cool to watch them fly, but I really just wanted them to set them down as soon as possible.  :heartylaugh:

It was emotional, though, to realize how much this one animal from ~29 million years ago meant to all of the people participating.  When I find a shark tooth, I usually don't stop and think too much about the animal's life...it's just one tooth.  In this case, though, the animal mattered.  It's life mattered 29 million years later.  And that felt very special.

I look forward to sharing more of the prep progress as it happens, and to actually putting a "face" to the dolphin.  Thank you all for sharing this experience with me!
