Pennsylvania Carboniferous Ferns and Other Fossils

Hello everyone,

I had my last hunt of the summer before returning to college by way of passing through Schuylkill County, PA, on my way home from a vacation. On a few quick Google searches off the cuff over lunch in a Wegmans in Wilkes-Barre, my family stopped at a cut for an hour or so and had some good fun combing through shales for fossils, along with  the ever-present anthracite coal.

I’m inundated with tasks relating to move-in and the new semester, but I’ve processed, cleaned, and prepped some of the finds so far, and here are the best/most interesting ones. I would appreciate y’all taking a look and providing me with some insight on them.

Misc. Fossils

Schuylkill Co., PA

Llewellyn Fm., Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian)

Fern 1:

This was our favorite. A lovely, pyritized fern frond. My mom asked me to split a block for her, and thankfully spotted this peeking out before I completely smashed it. Unfortunately, the corner is still gone, but I did my best to prep the whole fern free.

Fern 2:

My personal favorite, because I found and split the shale with both top and bottom, and I have both prepped and display-ready!

Bark 3:

Some lycophyte, I imagine. Found three separate pieces down a wash and later found they all fit together! Lovely bronze-y color too.

Bark 4:

Very delicate lycophyte. Preliminary research points to Sigillaria sp. ?

Seed 5?:

This is both top and bottom of the same piece. It popped out and split while I was prepping Fern 1. First instinct was to think it was a seed? I suppose it could be geological, too. One half has more of the “shell”, while the other has more “insides” present.

That is all, thanks for taking a look.

LOL, very true! I hope I can go back sometime and spend longer. I feel I missed all kinds of plants in retrospect.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Those look great! I have friends who live in Waymart, northeast of where you were, and I always look at the road cuts when driving by. Got talk my wife into stopping sometime.

Thanks everyone! Hoping to get a trip report up after I finish moving in.

Anyone on here good with St. Clair/Llewellyn fern ID or know a resource I can use to look these up?
