I found this on the shore of lake michigan. It apears to be a Brachiopod but has a strange skin like substance on it. Any ideas?

This actually looks like the internal cast of a brachiopod - shell is worn away.

Take a photo of the beak (red arrow) and the other side. Maybe it is an internal mold.

Here are the pictures of the beak and underside. This, internal mold, isn’t rare is it?

You can find them by the hundreds, even thousands in certain areas. Not rare by any means.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

The small fragment of shell seen in the top photo of this last set confirms the internal mold identification.
