I went fossil hunting in Steierdorf, Romania and I found a lot of flora fossils, such as the "Horsetail" plant, and one bivalve fossil.

But this next piece is one that I can't decide if it's actually a fossil and what even it could be.

There is a raised "bump" that looks and feels a bit different than the rest of the shale, and it also has horizontal lines going through it only in that raised bump place. As if something is embedded in it.

In addition to this focal "bump" (lack of a better word for me), there is also a small, separate imprint on the side that I also want to inquire about.

I have attached the pictures. Please let me know anything you can tell me!

Thank you :D

This is what I can find online:

"a Mesozoic basin with Lower Jurassic – Late
Cretaceous sediments."

"Exceptional plant and animal fossils were recorded from Anina, formerly known as Steierdorf, a well known fossiliferous, coal mining locality in the South Carpathians. The Early Jurassic flora of the Steierdorf Formation is represented by bryophytes, pteridophytes and gymnosperms, counting more than 120 taxa. This flora yields well preserved cuticles, and in situ spores and pollen, it is associated with numerous trace fossils, generated by insects or reptiles, while the plant-animal interactions are highly diverse too."

Neat find-  I'm having a hard time making up my mind between some sort of crustacean, a trilobite pygidium, or some sort of cephalopod material.  Interested to see what the experts say

It's super interesting. Since we're now considering marine sources, might it be an oyster that happens to have very regular features in its shell?

That might be it.  I hadn't noticed before that it extends beyond where the 'ridges' are.

Still not ruling out the other possibilities though.

It looks like a Eurypterid in some of the photos.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

I was thinking that as well.
