You have to love this incredible video of the beginning of an Icelandic rift volcanic eruption. When the ground starts to steam beneath your feet, run!

Aside from the disrupted lives and destruction of property and infrastructure, it has been utterly fascinating to watch the activity of this volcanic field over the past few years.

Context is critical.

I was on a cruise around Iceland this past week. The volcano erupted Thursday night so the cruise line rented buses and took us to view the volcano Friday evening. We could only get within 12 miles of the eruption. It looked really good through binoculars, but my phone camera didn't do very well with photos. My wife's camera did a better job. Here are some of my photos. The winds were around 40 mph. I took a few videos through my binoculars, but it was very difficult with the wind.

I love the fact that when a new volcano erupts in Iceland, there is a good chance one of us will be there....
