Dantheman135
Got the chance today to do some fossil finding at Whiskey Bridge in Bryan, Texas. This site is Eocene-aged, Crockett Formation mudstone and contains a variety of marine fossils. I brought a friend along for his first time fossil hunting. We only had an hour but we got to find some good shells and what I believe is a cuttlefish prong. I was hoping to find some shark teeth which we did not, but there’s always next time . I only brought a screwdriver along, but in the future I’ll bring something a little more substantial as some of the matrix is tough. Not long after we got there I was climbing up part of the bluff and accidentally grabbed a vine that had a large yellow-jacket nest on it and got stung a couple times. Probably should have been watching what I was grabbing and not looking for fossils. Fossils are pictured below. I still need to clean them up and ID some of them. I believe this is a cuttlefish prong? I found it just above the iron layer that sits over what is called the Main Glauconite Bed (I believe?). This last one was a bit strange. I accidentally cracked a small 1/2” concretion open, and noticed the imprint of some lines and other markings. It hard to see in the photo but I did my best to lighten and crop them. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
