Creating Future Paleontologists

Morrison, Iowa is a small town in central Iowa with a population of just 98. Every year the town invites our fossil/ mineral club to participate in their well attended Prairie Day celebration. Here is a photo of Morrison's suburbs!

Our club gears its displays towards the younger generation in hopes of stimulating some interest in geology/ paleontology.

My display of fossil sharks teeth and "find your own fossil" has always been a hit with the children. And again I was asked to participate.

So I had to get busy creating 100 "rocks" containing teeth for the celebration.

Finally, the main reason for the post, showing a few of the MANY children that enjoyed fossil collecting as much as you and I do.

And finally, my favorite! This trio was thrilled with their finds and PLEADED with me to break open another rock. After explaining that it would be sad if I ran out of rocks for children that had yet to crack one open, they were satisfied with their finds and talked me into taking their picture. While attempting to photograph the three, no one was showing their bright smile that I knew they had. So I made the suggestion that whoever smiled the best would win an extra swing of the rock hammer. After we all reviewed the beautiful smiles, it was determined to be a tie and each recieved a rock to take home and discover the treasures within!

You sure would make a great grandpa if you aren't already one :D And those are the best suburbs I've seen in years.

Fantastic event,  Mike. I love all your giveback activities of your time,  your knowledge, your fossils.  Spreading joy. Here is a memory... Deep water in Florida in February.. No long sleave shirts for you.

Well I am only 16 (at heart!). No grandkids. If anyone can marry off my kids so as to "create" grandkids, I would send you some nice fossils.

Jack, I get more thrill out of this than the kids, just no picture of my smiling face.
