Paleontology Before Relocation

Buffalopterus

Recommended Posts

I joined the Fossil Forum at about the time my funding ran out at the Paleontological Research Institution in Ithaca, NY in April, 2024. Up until then, I was actively collecting fossils, authoring a paper for NYSGA September, 2023 and preparing fossils for several clients. Then it came to a screeching halt! My wife and I sold our house, bought a new house in South Carolina and since we undertook moving ourselves, have spent about 4 months packing and transferring our personal belongings including a large collection of fossils to the new home.

Since the move is complete at the end of September, and I do not know when I will have the opportunity again, I have spent almost every other day for the last week field collecting in the Finger Lakes of NY, where I have lived for the past 60 years. I have collected my favorite eurypterids, trilobites, crinoids, brachiopods and more. The photos below are specimens as they were collected in the field and as such unprepared. Once becoming established in our new home in South Carolina, fossil collecting and preparation will once again become regular activities. I will post several specimens that I have prepared and I sincerely hope I will be able to meet up with others who share similar interests in field collecting fossils and be able to learn the stratigraphy of the region including South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

Welcome to South Carolina!  You'll have to shift fossil gears a little, but there is a lot to be found and prepped here!

  • Thank You 1

Excellent meeting you in the field Sunday, Those are some nice crinoid and eurypterid finds. Congrats. Good luck hunting in your new digs. Though the area where you're going is metamorphic, but very scenic, within a day's drive there is plenty of variety of fossil collecting opportunities worth checking out.

I also enjoyed meeting you, Jeff, as well this past Sunday. Once established, I plan on researching a bunch of areas to figure out where to best find fossils. Then I will be off and running again.

Denis, Thank you for the compliment. I have been collecting fossils my entire life and recognize that they all do not have to be museum specimens to be of some significance. I field collect as much as possible.

Thank you, I just need to now figure out where by connecting with the appropriate people.
