Hi

i found the following sample whilst walking on a beach near the village of Mey in Caithness, Scotland.

firstly, is it anything fossilised? Secondly if so, can anyone identify it?

Thanks in advance

To my understanding, Devonian marine fossils can be found around Caithness, Scotland. Not sure what it is, burrows maybe???

How big is it?

Looks like a trace fossil such as Lockeia. But could also be a synsedimentary structure of some sort.

I agree, there appears to be more variation in shape than i would expect if it was Lockeia  however that could be due to compaction distortion.

Thank you for coming back so soon..

the rock sample is around 25-30 cm across and the individual “lumps” are between 10-25mm long

I think if it is a fossil, it's almost certainly a trace fossil. I would agree with the others, it is probably a track of some type of invertebrate.

These look more like flute casts to me, rather than ichnofossils.
