New Members Appeltje Posted Sunday at 01:10 PM New Members Share Posted Sunday at 01:10 PM I went to the beach in the Netherlands and I found this. It looks a lot like a fossil but I’m not sure. Does anyone know what it could be and if it’s old?
Fossildude19
Looks like a fossil (Toe?) bone. What area/or beach in the Netherlands? Location is important in narrowing down Identifications. 1 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Rockwood
Toe, ankle, wrist, I can't say, but it's definitely a bone fossil. 1

Ivaldir
Looks like a middle phalanx of a horse to me. Deer and bovine have 2 toes next to each other, so thinner phalanges for each toe. Horses have 1 toe, with this symmetrical and broader kind of phalanges. 3

Just that this sort of Pleistocene mammal material is common on the bed of the North Sea and in Pleistocene deposits along the cliffs. It is frequently washed or dredged onto beaches. If you're interested: look up 'Doggerland', it's a large area in now the North Sea but used to be mammoth steppes during the last ice age. Fossils from here wash up at the coast in Belgium and Netherlands sometimes Edited Sunday at 02:56 PM by Ivaldir
