Hello, I am new to fossil love! 
I found this specimen at Dillons Beach in California. can someone please steer me in the right direction of anything at all? I did bring it to my anthropology professor and he was not helpful or could not be. 

any information is going to be great. thank you

Looks like a probably modern shell with Cliona celata sponge borings or similar.

Welcome to the forum! You have a good eye for distinguishing the difference between rocks and biological matter, which is very useful in fossil hunting.  Good luck in you're new interest! It's a great field.
