hi everyone,

I found this digging in a small river in northern wisconsin about 6-12 inches under the sand in the water, while my son was crawfish hunting. Most rock identifier's say it is amber. I put a hot needle(smallone) on it and nothing on it noticable, and no pine smell. I tried the float in salt water and it did not. I am going to get a UV light and see what it looks like tomorrow but I cant find anything about finding amber in wisconsin but I love this thing and I would like to know opinions, I understand its only photos but let me know what you think please.

Looks like melted or water/sand worn glass.

so i did some research on old glass bottles and such didnt find anything that was 5/8 to 11/16 thick, except table tops maybe and i was digging in the same area over days and nothing else like it...and not to mention it has no characteristic of a table top... thanks again i appreciate your time anyways.

This looks like slag glass. When iron ore is melted down to create steel the leftover stuff is poured out usually in a river or water source creating slag glass. The slag can be carried downstream or be leftover in dry creeks. It will usually always have a few round craters from air bubbles or little chunks of rock on occasion. Are there any old iron refineries in the area? Here are a few pieces i have right here of slag.

Bottom of a beer bottle? Or similar jug of greater size?
