New Members maelarae Posted yesterday at 12:15 AM New Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:15 AM Hi 😳 I know absolutely nothing about Fossils or rocks but I've always been intrigued by them. I found this in New Mexico ( U.S.A.) on some open land. I really don't have any idea what ot is so any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much! ClearLake Posted yesterday at 12:20 AM Share Posted yesterday at 12:20 AM This looks geologic, not a fossil. It looks like a chunk of conglomerate, that is a rock composed of many different rock fragments, some of which are fairly large. Think of a landslide or very energetic stream bed that lithifies into rock. On several of your pictures you can see all the variously sized pebbles cemented together.
Rockwood Posted yesterday at 12:29 AM Share Posted yesterday at 12:29 AM It could also be partially consolidated sediment that was ripped up and redeposited by a storm.
Oxytropidoceras Posted yesterday at 01:25 AM Share Posted yesterday at 01:25 AM (edited) I would suspect that it is fanconglomerate cemented by calcrete. For example: Calcrete Growth in Alluvial Lowlands - New Findings in Eastern Washington State and Calcic soils and calcretes in the southwestern United States, USGS Open-File Report 77-794 by George Odell Bachman and Michael N.
