Future fossil hunting trip

Could anyone recommend any places to go for fossil hunting? Specifically in the San Joaquin Valley? Also what to use if the land there is private property and if it’s owned by companies or by the government. Any help is still help, thanks.

Google and the AI partner are your friends: Took 20 seconds to search find fossils in that location. Good Luck!

Fossils in the San Joaquin Valley of California can be found in several locations, including the Fairmead Fossil Discovery Center, the McKittrick tar seeps, and the Kettleman Hills:

  • Fairmead Fossil Discovery Center
Located off SR 99 at Avenue 21, this center is home to one of the most significant fossil beds on the West Coast. The center features a 14-foot tall replica of a Columbian Mammoth, a mock dig site, a paleontology lab, and a movie theater. The fossils on display include saber-toothed cats, ground sloths, horses, camels, llamas, rabbits, rodents, and reptiles.

  • McKittrick tar seeps
More than 29,000 vertebrate fossils have been recovered from the McKittrick tar seeps, including megafauna like sloths and elephant-relatives, as well as birds, lizards, and mice.

Regional/County tax assessor's offices are the place to check on property ownership.
