Fossilized tooth or tooth shaped rock

Hi all,

I am new here and was wondering if anyone might have some insight into an odd find.  For background, I have been diving for over 14 years about 30 miles off the coast of NC.  This is a great though challenging location for finding fossilized teeth for all kinds from megs to auriculatus to benedini to horse teeth.  On one dive many years ago I came up with what looked alike a tooth shaped rock.  I didn't have much time to think about it then but now that I am retired, I have been thinking about it more.  I have posted some pics comparing it to a Meg tooth which was found at the site.  It does not appear to be a Meg tooth but...  I did a bit of poking around and there is hard black substrate underneath what appears to be compacted clay (?).  The outer portion does not dissolve in vinegar (even over night).  The pock marks are how it came up and resemble the hard clay bottom we hit after digging though a few inches of sand.  We have never been able to dig through the clay.  My thought is the clay filled in tooth impression but I have never seen a tooth this shape, this big on the web.  I took it to fossil day at the Harvard Museum of Natural History and their experts were unsure of what it was also.  Please have a look and feel free to share any thoughts.  I am just really curious.  It reminds me of a benedini but I don't think they come this large...)
