Since it is under Fossil ID, I'm guessing that is what is being asked. (What is the ID?) Looks like Petrified Palm Wood, (Palmoxylon) to me. 3 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." It's likely a trunk or thick branch. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Carl
Absolutely Palmoxylon, but not technically wood. Should be referred to as palm fiber or palm trunk.
New Members sodaspeak Posted Wednesday at 10:15 PM Author New Members Share Posted Wednesday at 10:15 PM Thank you Carl! Would the distinctive shape of the cross section indicate whether this is trunk, frond, root, or...?
Fossildude19
I wouldn't think frond at all. This looks like a piece of trunk to me. The palm fronds would look much different. The shape is likely from when the tree was destroyed, and fossilized. I don't think you can say more than it is palm "wood". 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." I think trunk is a safe bet. The roots and fronds have a very different structure.
