Strange ? botanical fossil from Sussex England, early Cretaceous.

Hi all.

Collected yesterday from near Hastings East Sussex (135 mya).  Some carbon is involved in the fossil.

Sectioned trunk-like feature, sections featuring an odd centre pimple. Wave-like structures projecting on the left, and on the right can be seen a vertical wavey line. Further left, vertical faint structures on the grey part of the nodule.

Low elevation images show the topographic profile of this weird trace fossil.

About 18cm long.

Any ideas ?  I thought it was a fossilized face hugger, initially.

Wishing all good collecting.

I'm not getting a fossil vibe from this.
Looks more like sedimentary structures, or maybe erosion features.

Wait for some other opinions, though.

The color looks more like iron staining than carbon, though.

Yes regarding iron staining, i am familiar. I was referring to carbon in between the segments. I will take a couple of pic's later of this, its not showing in those images sorry.

The centralized pocks in the ''trunk'' indicate an organic structure in my opinion. I come across many erosion nodules whilst searching.  But my fault, re the carbon.

I do think possibly Horsetail, as there are those faint long thin branch-like features on the less stained part

The carbon is showing in this pic, and there is carbon in the pock mark. Arrowed.

The faint ''stems'' are arrowed

Thanks for your opinions though.

Ok. I see a bit of carbon.

I still, however, cannot make on anything else that indicates plant fossil to me. Nothing identifiable, anyways.

It's entirely possible that there is some sort of plant fossil there.

I just don't think it is identifiable, if it is indeed a plant fossil.

And I am not able to see it.

Beaconites or Ophiomorpha ?

to amplify: an ichnite, the botanical material ( if any ) being adventitious?
