notes: interesting rock i found on the beach today, it resembles the color and texture of oyster shells ive found, but im uncertain due to the thickness. possibly two shells stuck together? or its just a rock type i am unfamiliar with

I think its part of an oyster shell, maybe near the joint between the two shells ? That would explain the thickness, or its just erodet in a really weird way.

For the final ID I would say, that its probably Pycnodonte vesicularis, as its by far the most common kind of oyster here, and also would match the age of the marine maastrichtian flint and chalk deposits this clam probably originated from.

Pycnodonte sounds like a good bet. I'm hesitant to attach a species since its only a fragment.

curse you sea for breaking all my fossils
