New Members Yowich Posted 2 hours ago New Members Share Posted 2 hours ago I wonder if it is a goniatite or ammonite. What is you thought and what is the key for identification for your thought, please?
DPS Ammonite
Welcome to the Forum. Please give us more info such as where did it come from (geographic locality), from what rock unit, age and size. My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. See my Arizona Paleontology Guide link The best single resource for Arizona paleontology anywhere. I got this sample from someone who bought it at a store long time ago and he does not have the description.

FossilDAWG
There is no way to tell from a cross section like this. To distinguish between goniatites and ammonites you have to see the suture line, which is a surface feature. The more you get towards the center the simpler the septa become, until they become smoothly curved like a nautiloid septum. If you turn the specimen over to look at the outside surface you may be able to see a bit of suture line, and if so that would be informative.
