Harry Pristis
This bone is a phalanx (toe bone) from an elephant most resembling a mammoth, rather than a mastodon. Judging from the reconstructions I've examined, these elephants have only two phalanges. This is unlike the typical pattern of three toe bones in mammals, and I can see that your toe bone has an articulation for a third bone. This third bone (the hoof core or claw core or whatever it's called in elephants) may be small or non-descript, thus it is not readily recovered for use in the articulations (both mammoth and mastodon) that I checked. ------Harry Pristis http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
