Well, I guess I'll try another trilobite. This is a Thaleops laurentiana (formerly known as Nanillaenus conradi) found on a trip with several forum members on Aug 14. This trilobite is uncommon enough at this site, but this one also has both eyes intact, a real bonus.

he is a neat little guy.

I found this giant on a trip to Colorado and it took me about an hour to chop it out of the block of stone it was in. Also there is even a borrow on the back of it. And this is the biggest shell i have ever found modern or prehistoric (not including cepheopods).

Info:

Spiecies - Mollusk

Age - Jurassic (I only know that based on a ammonite i found in the same layer so i may be wrong)

Formation - Unknown

Location - Pueblo, Colorado

Found - 8/1/2010

post-2572-002399100 1281720067_thumb.jpg

-Frozen

There is no marine Jurassic close to Pueblo, but there is a lot of Cretaceous. Around the reservoir is the Greenhorn formation, but most of the area is Pierre shale. Your fossil is an Inoceramus, which is common in the Pierre. A variety of ammonites occur in the area too, including several species of Didymoceras and Baculites, as well as Scaphites, Placenticeras, Exiteloceras, Pachydiscus, and others.

Thanks for the correction.

But even though it is a common fossil the size is uncommon i asume.

Why photograph the critter against a dull background... too boring

decided to have some fun...

mounted the trilobite against a field of microcrystals actually Silurian era sphalerite and dolomite crystals collected from Dundas Quarry..... looks much better in surrealist scape......

"This Devonian trilobite teleported via blue telephone box TARDIS to Silurian Alien world into a field of microcrystals ... nothing to do but to curl up and hide.... okay too much watching sci fi Dr WHO TV shows as a kid.... better change the channel"

Used direct coupled German microscope objective to a Foveon DSLR camera, mounted on copy stand.

OKAY I flip the critter on its head.... see pygidium almost touching the head as the trilobite rolls up into a little ball as a defensive position as the wave above churn the stormy waters below.... buried alive +400 million yrs ago..... fossilized

and retrieved from a clay pit exposed after a heavy rain gently washes it clean ready for the picking.

Here's my entry. I found this Basilosaurus vertebrae August 14, 2010 in the Flint River. It's from the Eocene period, I believe.
