Crinoid Rescue

I have a bunch of crinoids preserved on a plate of clay and fossilized wood, but the wood is falling apart and seriously threatening the crinoid! The clay covers the wood and some of the Crinoid but has been crumbling away and the clay is starting to crack.

Any ways to stop the destruction?

Heres a pic i took a few days ago when i noticed the problem:

use the search engine here to search the term "consolidant". the most likely "hardeners" i would use would be vinac or butvar dissolved in acetone to a thin, penetrating consolidant.

but that dramatically depends on how dry the material is and how badly it's falling apart. whatever you do, don't create a thin "skin" of protection on the outside and leave the center to decompose. read up on preparation/consolidation techniques. there's tons of info online about it.
