Texas Sphenodiscus Project

Pictured is the best of the 4 Sphenodiscus sp. "uglies" I had a buddy slice for me recently. This is not yet polished but just wet with water to show some detail. We plan to cut a few more blems to see what's inside. So far 2 of the 4 were pretty nice with calcite filled hollow chambers and the other 2 were turds. These come from the Escondido formation of South Texas, a Maastrichtian deposit about 66 million years old. I hope the others have this sort of definition and detail and in the meantime, I hope to pick up some more. I have several that are too nice to cut, but every one of the uglies will be going under the saw in hopes of more good ones.

Id have to say, that really is dang cool! Dan goes out into the texas wildernes, finds an antient creature, ugly or not, then gets to cut it in half and see what the wonder of mother nature can do. Nice going Dan, thats going to make a super neato display!!!
