Auspex
The conifers are called "softwoods", and deciduous trees are called "hardwoods" (even though some have rather soft wood). tracer
oh dang! to me a hardwood is a hard wood - like oak, walnut, um, ironwood, cocabolo, etc. man, i hate when i jump in on topics i know nothing about. that was just another bad deciduousness on my part. jpc
Roman- in english the two words... hardwood and softwood have a biological meaning...deciduous trees and coniferous trees, as auspex says, and some of the conifers are indeed not soft. In woodworking the differences are more literal... hard woods are hard, wear down your saw blades and sandpaper. Soft woods are softer. Hope that helps.
