sixgill pete
I found this Friday at the Martin Marietta Quarry in Onslow County NC. The rock is rather large and I would at least like to make it smaller and possibly expose more of or extract the tooth. I am not experienced at all in doing this type of stuff as most of what we find here is not engulfed in matrix like this. Can anyone give me any ideas? Paleoc
Sometimes that kind of coarse limestone can be softened or even slightly dissolved with ordinary tap water. Try softening the limestone and then scraping it away with a dental pick. As the root becomes exposed, it is often soft and easily broken so I recommend as you expose the root, harden it with superglue.

BobWill
Limestone I find in Texas comes in many different grades of hardness. If yours is soft and crumbly enough, try scraping the matrix away with anything sharp but start out pretty far away from the tooth to avoid hitting it. Sometimes you can chisel a trough around the rock to create a weak place to break it in two which could give you a chance work your way up to the tooth from all sides uniformly. Use smaller tools as you get to the more delicate close-in work.
