Hello all!

I found something back in April at my early Jurassic Shuttle Meadow Fm. plant locality that has me a bit stumped.

I have read of occurrences of conchostrachans, and darwinulid ostracods in the Shuttle Meadow formation, but have yet to find them.

This item is reminiscent of an ostracod, but I am not sure, as I know very little about these invertebrates.

My first thought was some type of seed or spore, but I have not seen any information about such things in my research.

Any thoughts on this? The size is 4 mm in length, and 2 mm in width.

I would like to hear any thoughts on this.

Thanks for your assistance, and for looking. :)

Interesting and I have no idea. Does look seedy to me.

Kind of looks like a single celled organism! A fresh water pond dweller! Just a gusses. Brings back memories when I was fascinated with watching them through a microscope when I was a little kid. Collecting the grass and placing it on the slides " belly chuckle " it was better than watching TV! That is what it reminds me of! Interesting find.

My best guess is a seed of some kind

Thanks Herb!

My first thought as well.

EDIT: the structures on it have me wondering, though...

Crustacean carapace?

It does look a little 'crabby'...but maybe not symmetrical enough... I'd opt for seed for now...

Thanks again, Herb. :) It is kinda cool looking, if small.

So the majority are voting for a seed of some type - Which I assumed.

Any other thoughts on this?

Look up "Branchiopoda". NOT BRACHIOPODS. Make sure that "n" is in there. They are fresh-water crustaceans a bit like ostracodes and I have collected some from the Lockatong in NJ.

Thank you, Erich. A quick search landed me a few photos of Cyzicus from the Lockatong, from an old ebay auction.

This item doesn't really look like those pics, or the sample of similar which Flyguy784 sent me last year.

I've googled estherids, cyzicus, branchiopods, and conchostracans.

Not much out there apparently. I did come across a reference to a paper by Bock about American Triassic Estherids, but have been unable to locate the paper in a cursory search. Looks like I'll have to devote more time to research on this one!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Further research on my part has yielded nothing new.

I'll likely just put in the collection with a label of "Unidentified seed or spore" and leave it at that.

I can find no matches in any of the literature about the Newark Supergroup or the Shuttle Meadow Fm.

Thanks for asking, Herb!

Hey Phil!

Good to see you here again!! :)

I'm not sure of anything with this one, bud.

There are documented occurences of beetle elytra (wing covers) being found in the Shuttle Meadow Fm., so it is a possibility.

They tend to look a little different though, - not so much texture to them.

EDIT:

post-2806-0-39752000-1342714264_thumb.jp

Pic garnered from THIS WEBSITE.

These were found in an old Quarry (now filled in) in the Portland Formation, however.

I am leaning more towards seed or spore or cone/bracht? due to the abundance of plant fossils found in the area.

Thanks for the input - still a head scratcher to me.

Regards,
