Missourian
Does anyone know of a site on the Internet where one can locate spots on maps using the Public Land Survey System, colloquially known as 'Township and Range'? I have many publications listing potential collecting sites, but no easy way to find them without tracking down paper 7.5' quads. Context is critical. ashcraft
I have a copy of "GPS for Dummies", which I can barely understand. Here are a couple of sites they list, don't know if they will work. GeoTrans downloadable at http://earth-info.nga.mil/GandG/geotrans. another site www.esg.montana.edu/gl. another www.ngs.noaa.gov/TOOLS. Good luck. Al Dente
Here are the instructions to get USGS topo maps downloaded onto your computer. You have to read the instructions carefully, it is not intuitive. They are scanned images of actual 7.5 minute quads and will have the township and range grid on the margin, assuming you are looking in a state that has the PLS system. http://nationalmap.gov/historical/help/download_instructions.html
Missourian
Thanks everyone for the links. Oy.... the Internet is wonderful for somethings and horrible for others.... At this point, I'd just be happy with a township index map for my area. I may have to do it by hand in my DeLorme state atlas. Context is critical. ashcraft
Missouri has township index map, available through the DNR, that is what they use to order the topo maps. They used to be free, and believe tehy have an interactive one on their website. Brent Ashcraft ashcraft, brent allen
ashcraft
Here is the link. This site allows you to order repros of old geologic maps. A real treasuretrove of info if they have one for the area you need. They are the actual maps the surveyor used, and are have hand written notes on them about particular oddities http://www.dnr.mo.gov/geology/statemap/missouri-maps.htm. Just click on the county of interest and it will get you on down to townships. Brent Ashcraft ashcraft, brent allen
