Terry C.
Several years ago a friend took me collecting shark teeth at a fresh road construction site in the upper Cretaceous in north central Mississippi (somewhere near New Albany). We found several teeth but I also picked up some fish vertebra and other miscellaneous pieces. The vertebra are fairly obvious but I'm not a good enough paleo guy to have a clue what the other pieces are (same display shot in different directions). Any thoughts? Fossildude19
Pic # 2 - To the right of the penny look like pieces of Sawfish rostral teeth (Roots and some enamel on one.). In the center. below the penny are pycnodont tooth plates. That's all I can help with. erose
Pic #2... The larger item to the far left may be a fragment of turtle shell/bone. Dark triangular shape above it appears to have a bit of serrated tooth enamel and might be the shark Squalicorax. Dark fragment with rounded pits might be a scute of some sort or just a concretion. The other two odd bits look like maybe ray scutes???? The obvious shell fragment reminds me of the right valve of Gryphaeostrea vomer. All of this is based on a very generalized Late Cretaceous assumption of age. And those Pycnodont teeth are very nice too!
Terry C.
Thanks guys, good call on the Pycnodont teeth - I had never heard of those before but a Google search indicated Fossildude and erose are right on. You're right about the shell fragment - looks like an operculum. I have no idea what a ray scute is or looks like. Turtle shell???? I'll take your word for it. Thanks, guys, Terry C. Oh no, don't put money on any of this. Those bean shaped teeth were easy. The rest is totally tentative.
Fossildude19
Terry, You're welcome. I'm pretty confident of the sawfish rostral teeth as well.
