New Members xsun Posted December 16, 2012 New Members Share Posted December 16, 2012 Hi - happy to find this forum! 1. We found this in Charmouth, England in August, What is it? 2. We also found one that looks like a small snail, and would like to confirm. 3.4. And just showing the shell fossil and the ammonite trace fossil we found there as well! Fossildude19
1 & 4 look like ammonites to me. Not sure what kind are common to Charmouth. 2 looks snailish to me, but again, I cannot be of assistance with an ID. Not sure what # 3 is, maybe a bivalve? Perhaps forum member Kosmoceras or TqB will weigh in and help you out. Nice finds. Thanks for posting them. Terry Dactyll
The first ammonite is called an Echioceras... found in the 'watch ammonite stone'....and I think the last one could be the same.... Difficult to ID the worn gastropod... Cheers Steve... And Welcome if your a New Member...
New Members xsun Posted December 17, 2012 Author New Members Share Posted December 17, 2012 Thanks! Does it look like that there is an ammonite fossil inside #1? Am I supposed to crack open it? I have another one like that, which seems to have something inside and I'll take a picture and post later.
Terry Dactyll
There is definately an ammonite in photo 1 but unfortunately if you crack it open theres a pretty good chance you will destroy it... It could be prepped professionally from the other side (that isnt worn) to reveal an Echioceras like this.... Edited December 17, 2012 by Terry Dactyll Cheers Steve... TqB
The gastropod looks like Ptychomphalus and the bivalve is probably a Pseudopecten or possibly Chlamys, both a bit worn to be sure though. Tarquin
