Rough Ammonite

Hello!

I am an amateur fossil hunter from Alberta. I regularly find beautiful specimens along the river, I have a few hundred pounds of ammonite that I am very proud to have hauled out of river coulees. I was wondering what some of my pieces might be worth in rough form. I don't want to sell much, just enough to keep my hobby going! The piece pictured is about 6 inches by 8 inches, one inch thick and has gorgeous red and green on both sides. What would someone on this site pay for something like that? Genuine alberta ammonite, I've had enough falls, bruises and wipeouts in the water to get it haha! Anyways, any help would be appreciated!

It is sold as a gem call Ammolite. If you do a search you will see its very valuable.

I have read that Canada is restricting the sale of those ammonites and pieces of ammonites. You should make sure that you can sell your specimens legally.

Valuation of fossils is not something we really do here on the forum.

Also, you need to establish yourself as a contributing member in good standing before you are allowed access to the members trade and sale area. (A number of quality posts - not just "Nice Finds!" - are necessary before that access is granted, as a deterrent to spammers).

Assigning value to fossils without holding the fossil in hand is not a reliable method of valuation, and should not be the sole guideline for you.

You can look on Ebay, or similar websites for your type of material, to see what similar material is currently going for.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not actually going to sell them on here, just personally to a friend. Like I said, I was just wondering what you would pay for rough material is all!

I apologize if I offended you. That was not my intent, but rather it was to inform you of the rules of the Forum.

That you were looking to sell to someone off the forum was not entirely clear in your first post. :)

That said, again, we do not generally do valuations of fossils here, because an honest appraisal cannot be made by looking at photographs online.

Most ammolite sold online has been polished to some degree, so I'm not sure how you could gain a value the rough material via googling ammolite online..

You might try asking a jeweler who deals in ammolite in your area what they think of your material, and get a proper value in person.

I hope this helps. :)
