Fossilized? Petrified? Hip Bone Socket?

Hi all - my first post, so will try to do it right... :-)

'Inherited' a small collection of rocks, minerals, fossils, and shells - this piece appears to be some sort of hip socket and is rock-hard like petrified wood. It weighs around 1.8lbs and measures 4 3/4" x 4 1/2" x 2 1/2".

It could be from out west, since there were also some petrified wood specimens in the collection... thank you for any clues!

Hi Abaloney! Welcome.

What you have here is a chert concretion. It's a natural formation that is very often confused for a fossil. Native Americans used the chert for arrowheads and tools.

Not a fossil, but a cool rock.

Thanks for the post. I had not thought of Eugene the Jeep for years.
