I do not believe it is fossilized wood, but then I don't have an alternative answer either. Most wood has an easily recognizable grain to it that I don't see here.

Perhaps a close up picture may reveal more detail. I too am curious as to what it is.

It's a bit greenish. Might not know patina.

Looks like a piece of chert. They can come in some really pretty colors.
