Could This Be A Fossil?

I found this picking through some shale near Chambless, CA.

It seems like it could be something but I'm not sure. A friend told me it could be a Leverite.

You know, leave er right where you found it.

Any information is appreciated.

I suspect it is an ironstone concretion. The "rind" reminds me of siderite, on its way to becoming limonite, ant the forms are not inconsistent with that.
