Trilo Prep ?

Krazy Rick

Recommended Posts

My friend gave me a couple of split Whitby shale Rocks, which have traces of Trilobites;

I was wondering if vinegar or peroxide could be used to expose more ? .... would either be safe on trilobites, or even touch the shale ? ( I'd like to leave them in the matrix .... IF, there is a bit more than I'm seeing now ) .... I will be setting up a prep station after the holidays; but for now; I thought maybe one of these might work ? .. Thanks

Hi Rick,

What you are suggesting is acid preparation. I just put a post up on my fossil adventure blog about acid prepping. Ins and outs, various commonly accessiable acids, and the damage you can do to the fossil in the process. A lot of fossil enthusiasts do not like acid preparation because it can erase the details in a fossil or even "melt" the fossil entirely. I have only experimented on Minnesota limestone matrix. If you do decide to go this route, I would suggest testing the reaction on your matrix and a fossil that you do not care too much about first.

Good luck!

Bev : )
