Natascha
Can anyone tell me if is this Dicranurus Monstrosus real or fake? Thanks!
Wendell Ricketts
It looks suspicious to me, but it's awfully hard to tell from a photo. Have you tried the "test by fire"? (Take a match, lighter, or other very small flame to the underside or edge and see if you smell plastic burning). piranha
I would say it looks like a fake. This one is typical of the practice of scratch marks to further obscure the detail of how the 'trilobite' and matrix come together. A sharp close-up photo will help determine with more certainty. Herb
Very nice. I looks fake to me also, the scratches from the prep. are not in a logical order, or direction. 1 "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence"_ Carl Sagen No trees were killed in this posting......however, many innocent electrons were diverted from where they originally intended to go. Natascha
thanks guys! Guess I will skip on this one the needle test, I guess if the needle goes in it's a fake, right?
LordTrilobite
I'd say these photos are not enough to judge. Right now I would say that it looks a little suspicious but nothing that makes it a clear fake or clear authentic fossil. It could be a decent fake or a real fossil with a meh prep. Fred
I love the smell of resin in the morning. If the question is whether it's ok to purchase this one, the answer is: don't. Paleo database, information and community
Scylla
I also think it looks fake, look at how the pygidium is scratched out.

Wrangellian
Assuming the needle test does not indicate resin, many of these are partially real and partially fake or enhanced by carving in the missing pieces out of the surrounding matrix (which is usually pretty obvious if you can see it clearly enough to discern the scratches around the reconstructed spines around the margins)
