hollynotsowell
Hi everyone, I have just been sorting out my finds from last year and came across this forgotten object. Can anyone help in identifying this, it was found on the beach at Yaverland I.O.W, and is approximately 4 x4 inches. here's hoping, Andrew
geodan03
Hi, that looks like a pebble with an interesting pattern, not a fossil. I like collecting water worn pebbles in the gravel pits around St. Louis, and i see patterns like this. These pebbles are worn by countless centuries of bumping up against each other in streams and rivers, exposing many of the nice colors and patterns withing the rock. Theres no telling what kind of rock it is by just looking at the surface, you would have to crack a piece off of it to see the inside. The smooth surface makes it hard to ID it. Could be basalt, diabase, etc..

ashcraft
My first guess would be a piece of water-worn iron containing rock. I have seen several here in SE Mo. that look similar. I think they form when a water impervious base starts collecting leached mineral on top. My second guess would be a pottery sherd, can't tell from the picture.
