Perhaps if you post a close up strait on of the end grain someone will be more likely to commit one way or the other. verydeadthings Posted December 9, 2014 Share Posted December 9, 2014 I'm certainly no plant expert, but I'd agree with Harry, it looks to me like petrified palm wood. If you found this in Louisiana, my guess is it's from the Oligocene Catahoula Formation. A quick search turned up this paper, which has some more information on the subject: http://petrifiedwoodmuseum.org/PDF/Palmoxylon%20of%20the%20Catahoula%20Formation2.pdf I have some petrified palm wood from the Toledo Bend area of western Louisiana which looks similar, although the preservation looks a bit different.
