The base of the display is a piece of styrofoam insulation covered with a sheet. The nail is pushed into the styrofoam to hold the crystal erect. Some of the larger pieces have a large gauge copper wire bent into a stand I used a piece of door weather strip, cut into 1 inch pieces, for the label stands. Great displays. Thanks for the explanation of the nail/styrofoam technique. That may work great for a dinosaur tooth display or a host of other things. I can see an advantage in the ability to adjust the height by simply changing the depth of the nail or using nails of various lengths. This would serve to let multiple objects in the case be more readily visible. ynot
I was recently given a few crystals from a local diggers estate (I did not know Him, but a friend of Mine did.). Two rutilated quartz crystals... and a cluster with one side clear and the other side with chlorite phantoms... These three crystals came from a closed site in a little town called Shingle Springs. Here is another El Dorado County quartz crystal with a coat of calcite on it.... A calcite crystal with some garnet crystals in/on it. From Nevada.

ynot
Back in 2013 and 2014 I went to a mine in northeast Georgia near a town called Lincolnton. This is called the Graves Mountain mine and they have an open collecting 3 day event in the spring and the fall. It is the type locality for a mineral called rutile TiO2. Here are a few of the rutile crystals I found there. And one that is covered with hematite.

RJB
Mother nature sure makes some amazing things. Nice stuff Tony. At one time many years ago I was getting into the agates and crystals, but shortly after I started I realized i didnt have enough time in my life to do all the fossils things I wanted to do and sold all my equipment and donated all my unfossil stuff to the local rock club. For me, that was a good choice. RB

I am very fond of the rutilated quartz. (And lucky it can be found in My area.) I have a larger chunk of that material that has not been polished, will see if I can find its hiding place and get a picture of it.
KimTexan
Nice crystals. SW Arkansas has a lot of quartz crystle. There use to be this rock shop we’d pass with this quartz crystle the size of a tree trunk sitting in front of the store. It was enormous and I thought it was so cool. A few years ago there was a crystal and mineral exhibit at a local nature preserve near Dallas called the Heard Museum. DPS people will know the place. Anyway, they had the most awesome mineral and crystals exhibit I have ever seen put on by a company called Arkenstone. I’ve been to a lot of Natural History museums and seen some nice mineral exhibits, but the Arkenstone one really wowed me. It was the most unique and gorgeous collection I had ever seen. Not that I’m a crystle or mineral conesure. They’re based out of Richardson, TX a suburb of Dallas. I think they’re a dealer, but their collection is awesome. They had yellow brucite on their site today. You may find their gallery interesting. http://www.irocks.com/galleries

Love the smokey quartz. Only way we collect much of anything around here is to be a member of a rock & mineral club. Unfortunately they are an hour & half or more away, so it doesn't work well for my situation.
