Guest Cris
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3318/01.html Here's a nice little 13 minute video on the permian extinction. It raises a pretty interesting theory that I haven't heard before. Do you other guys buy it? It sounds like it's possible to me...

Guest solius symbiosus
Sounds plausible, Out-gassing was going theory on the K/T extinctions until the discovery of Chicxulub. I have read of some on going research attributing the Permian extinction to a Gamma Ray Burst(GRB) in the our vicinity. One of these things "cooked off" ... I think it was on 12/26/04, in a galaxy 50mly from the Milky Way(an incredible distance) that disrupted communications on Earth. GRBs put out more energy in one sec than the Sun does over it's entire life span.
Guest Nicholas
I think it is very probable that this situation, or maybe a similar situation is the underlying causes for mass extinction. I wouldn't rule other possible reasons out yet though. Great video.
