DPS Ammonite
William, Here is the best advice that I can offer after collecting rocks and fossils for several decades. First, buy 4 mil thickness clear zip bags. (Not the kind in the supermarket.) Thinner bags won't last long and won't protect your fossils. I use clmsupply.com. http://www.cmlsupply.com/4-mil-reclosable-bags/ I like sizes: 2'x3', 3'x4', 4'x6, 6'x6'. Split an order with friends at your local fossil society such as the Dallas Paleontological Society. If you buy 10 bags they will discount the prices by 40%. As you collect your fossils put them in these bags with information such as formation, locality, type, date etc.on a piece of paper. Cover fossils with newspaper or tissue if needed for protection. Once you fill the bag, put it in a box. I like 2' high literature mailing boxes that hold 8.5 x 11' paper such as those at interplas.com. Don't forget to label your boxes. http://www.interplas.com/11.125-x-8.75-x-2-deluxe-literature-mailers-p-cp-110802d?gdftrk=gdfV28538_a_7c3121_a_7c11842_a_7cCP_d_110802D&gclid=CLSslsyQhckCFZJgfgodRfsKqg Another option is mineral stock boxes from Shannon and Sons Minerals: https://www.shannonsminerals.com/shop/index.php/shannonsminerals/dosen-faltschachteln/sammlungskisten-umkarton/half-size-stock-flat-2-depth-25-pair-deliverable-in-us-and-canada.html If you want (and you can lift them) you can put larger fossils and boxes of fossils into a larger box such as a file folder box which are 12' x 15' x 10' high. Buy only the thickest heavy duty boxes as you can put 40 lbs of fossils into one. Remember, always label your fossils and pack them so that they don't break. A box of fossils is just a box of fossils while a box of fossils with labels and related collection information is a collection. Collections have scientific value, boxes of fossils rarely do. Cheers, John 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. See my Arizona Paleontology Guide link The best single resource for Arizona paleontology anywhere.
