Mango
Found this in the Peace River last weekend. I haven't researched very hard to find this one. I really have no idea what it is or where to start looking. My guess is from a fish. Shape reminds me of gills. Piece is 1 3/4" long. It is translucent. Sorry for not having a scale in photo. I am working on that for future ids. Pentax Optio W60

Mango
I am having a run of posting non fossil pieces. Is this a fossil, or is it most likely from a more recent fish deposit? Can a fossil be translucent? Thank you for the replies. Pentax Optio W60

But, is it mineralized? . . . does it 'clack' or or does it 'clink' when you tap it against your teeth? Family Percidae, preopercular bone, as Ron says. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Mango
preoperculum clinked when tapped against my tooth. To compare, I tapped my tooth with a small piece of fossilized bone. The bone clacked when tapped against tooth. That is the best way I can portray my idea of clink and clank. Bone fragment seemed to be louder.
