Fish Part?

Mango

Recommended Posts

Found this in the Peace River last weekend. I haven't researched very hard to find this one. I really have no idea what it is or where to start looking. My guess is from a fish. Shape reminds me of gills. Piece is 1 3/4" long. It is translucent.

Sorry for not having a scale in photo. I am working on that for future ids.

I am having a run of posting non fossil pieces. Is this a fossil, or is it most likely from a more recent fish deposit? Can a fossil be translucent?

Thank you for the replies.

It is probably fossilized. :)

Fossilized, sure. . . . if it doesn't taste fishy. But, is it mineralized? . . . does it 'clack' or or does it 'clink' when you tap it against your teeth?

Family Percidae, preopercular bone, as Ron says.

preoperculum clinked when tapped against my tooth. To compare, I tapped my tooth with a small piece of fossilized bone. The bone clacked when tapped against tooth. That is the best way I can portray my idea of clink and clank. Bone fragment seemed to be louder.
