Trilobites!

I went to the Black Cat Mountain quarry, Haragan Fm, Clarita, OK last Saturday with the Dallas Paleo Society. Its 400 miles from home and I've been meaning to go there for years. Its so long a drive for me that even when carpooling I probably won't visit too often, but it was well worth the effort this time. For $20 a head we got to dig for about 6 hours, and the fee included a good book on trilobites from that formation. I found a few bugs by digging up and splitting limestone, but did the best by crawling the spoil piles. I did a body count last night and counted 50 bugs including a mix of boogered specimens used to learn prep, slightly flawed specimens still worth keeping, and 15-20 perfect or near perfect specimens. So far it appears that I took Paciphacops, Reedops, and Ketternapsis. Prep will take a little while so look for them in my April report (Still prepping out March stuff!)

WOW! that's awesome Dan! Can anyone pay to hunt there? I have been wanting to go there for some time now. I am only about 130 miles from Clarita.

Daniel

what a lucky man!

I hope to go there one time in my life to meet also Bob Carrol, a real good guy!

Don't miss the new book "Trilobite of Black Cat Mountain" published by George Hansen. I've a copy of this book and also if it lack a little bit of image it is a very interesting book about this lower Devonian fauna.

It will be possible for you to put some images of raw material to see how these bug appear in the limestone?

I know that trilos are the stars of the show, but what else turns up there?

The Hansen book is the one Bob was peddling. I wish it had more pics too but it is still a good reference for my library. Yes this is a pay quarry open to the public. Just google up Bob Carroll's name and give him a jingle. Give him a chance to bust up some new rock and try to get in there when a club hasn't visited in a while. I'll shoot a few pics of some of my better specimens in matrix before I prep them (just in case I ruin them with my scribe, hahaha) Actually the matrix seems to separate from the fossil pretty easily. The limestone seems very workable with a scribe. Now I'll have to decide what is the softest media I can blast them with. Other than bugs, I picked up a few bivalves, gastropods, brachiopods, and orthocone cephalopods. Since I don't get to work the Devonian very often, I enjoyed gathering varied fauna.

Yeah , we were there right when Bob had the Track Hoe there busting up the Quarry .

Nice hunting there isn't it ?

Show a little respect there when speaking about Bob and his book , peddling is not a good terminology .

After all he does not have to let anyone come to his Quarry .

Hunting fossils is fun , but discovering is better !

That sounds like a really productive trip!

I can't wait to see some of those beauties after you prep them.

You can do it in all the free time that you have :D

Can't wait to see them. We (HGMS) were just talking about that place last night and may be adding it to our field trip list this year.

MAN, How did I miss that trip???? I have always wanted to get in that place. I have about 20 or so bugs from there, ANd what a challenge to prep! Most bugs are smaller than a quarter, but are very detailed.

Cant wait for the prep photos
